The Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech is inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in bio-based materials for sustainability. The position is a full-time, academic year (9 month) appointment at the rank of assistant professor and is available immediately with a preferred start date of January 1, 2020 or earlier.
The future of life on Earth depends on a successful transition to sustainable materials. Packaging materials, in particular, are rapidly growing in demand due to increases in e-commerce and market globalization. The Department of Sustainable Biomaterials is transforming itself into the nation’s leading institution in material sustainability by integrating its current strengths in bio-based materials, packaging systems and design, sustainable manufacturing, sustainable business, circular economy, and green building into a holistic, comprehensive program to advance the transition to sustainable materials. The aim of this position is to increase synergy between current programmatic strengths in bio-based materials and packaging systems and design. Complementary areas of expertise that are of interest include, but are not limited to, design and synthesis of sustainable polymers, sustainable packaging technologies, bioplastics, innovative plant fiber- or nanofiber-based materials, polymer synthesis by industrial biotechnology methods, and material biodegradation.lick to add text, images, and other content.
